In February 2026, CFAN Advisors ranked #41 on Google for their most important term. Ninety days later, they were #1. Combined regional pages now rank top-3 for 28 high-intent keywords. Here's the exact week-by-week plan.

This isn't magic. It's the compounding effect of six things done consistently. If you're launching a new site or trying to break the plateau, apply this playbook in order — don't skip phases.

The three phases

Phase 1: Foundation (weeks 1–4)

You can't rank if Google can't crawl, understand, and trust your site. Fix the plumbing before you publish a single word.

Week 1: Technical audit

Run Screaming Frog (free up to 500 URLs) or Ahrefs Site Audit. Fix:

Week 2: Schema and structured data

Add JSON-LD schema for every page type. At minimum: Organization on every page, LocalBusiness on your contact page, Service on each service page, Article on blog posts. Test each with Google's Rich Results Test tool. This is the single fastest way to make your Google result take up more real estate — sitelinks, star ratings, business info panels.

Week 3: Site architecture

Structure your URLs like a filing cabinet: /services/web-design/brisbane, not /page?id=42. Each page should target one keyword cluster. Build an XML sitemap and submit it in Google Search Console. Add a robots.txt that blocks utility pages (status, admin, staging) but allows everything you want indexed.

Week 4: Speed

Core Web Vitals became a ranking factor in 2021 and have only tightened. Target: LCP under 2.5s, INP under 200ms, CLS under 0.1. Convert hero images to AVIF, defer non-critical JS, set up Cloudflare, self-host fonts. If you're on WordPress, our performance playbook covers the specifics.

Phase 2: Content (weeks 5–8)

Google rewards depth and topical authority. Publishing one 400-word "About Us" post a month gets you nothing. Publishing three interconnected 2,000-word guides on the same topic can dominate a niche.

Week 5: Keyword clustering

Take your top 20 target keywords and group them into 5–8 clusters. A cluster is a set of related searches that share user intent. Example cluster for a Brisbane accountant:

You'll build one pillar page for the core term and 3–5 supporting pages for the variants. All internally linked.

Weeks 6–7: Pillar pages

Write your pillar pages. Each should be 2,000–3,500 words, answer the top 8 questions Google auto-suggests for that keyword, and include images, videos, or interactive elements. Use H2s and H3s to structure the content — Google reads them as topic signals.

Week 8: Content refresh

If you already have blog posts or landing pages, update them. Google rewards freshness. Add 500 words of new insight to every post older than a year, refresh screenshots, update stats, and add internal links to your new pillar pages.

Phase 3: Authority (weeks 9–12)

Rankings finally start moving here — because content + technical + authority is the trifecta Google needs.

Week 9: Google Business Profile

If you serve local customers, this is the #1 lever. Claim your GBP, complete every field (categories, hours, service areas, photos, products, services), and start collecting reviews. GBP alone can put you in the map pack, which drives 30–40% of local clicks.

Week 10: Local citations

Get consistent listings on Yelp AU, Yellow Pages, True Local, Hotfrog, Localsearch, and any industry-specific directories. Your name, address, and phone number must match your website exactly. Inconsistent citations confuse Google.

Weeks 11–12: Backlinks

Focus on quality over quantity. Three good links beat 30 bad ones. Tactics that worked in 2026:

What actually happened for CFAN

Position tracking week by week for "certified financial advisor Auckland" — the primary target term:

The compound effect matters. If you only do phase 1 and skip content, you'll plateau at page 2. If you only publish content without technical foundation, Google can't crawl it well. All three phases stack.
